All about wisdom!
What is it, how do I get it, why is it important?
During a main session at BSU last month, we talked about wisdom. Whenever I think of wisdom, I just think of making the right decisions, but it is so much deeper than that! We are going to discuss what wisdom is, how to get it, and why it is important!
3 common questions about wisdom:
what is wisdom? Well I’m so glad you asked! Godly wisdom is fearing the Lord. It is the opposite of foolishness, and it comes from God. Proverbs 1:7 states, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Provers 2:6 - “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” It is more valuable than money - “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!” Proverbs 16:16
Wisdom is living in light of God as our Creator. Worldly wisdom is always centered on the self; this is vastly different from fearing the Lord. We are to be in awe of God! You can either choose to walk in the path of wisdom (which leads to life), or you can walk in the path of foolishness (which leads to death). “For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” 1 Corinthians 1:21-25
how do I get wisdom? Again…so glad you asked! “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
God knew we’d be asking this question today, so He decided to give us the exact answer we needed over 1900 years ago. I could just leave it here since God gave us exactly what we needed, but I’m going to dive a little deeper.
The only way for us to know God is to know Jesus Christ. Apart from Christ we are fools. (P.S. the truth hurts.) We have to acknowledge our need and dependence on God. We can grow in wisdom through Godly teaching and community, and by continually fixing our eyes upon Jesus. We should be reminded of what Jesus did on the cross for us each day.
why is wisdom important? Once again…so glad you asked! (that’s the last time I promise). You can’t know God without wisdom. Nothing in this world gives you will lead to the source of life. “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” John 14:6
You cannot glorify God without wisdom! It matters because the end of folly is destruction; we will fall into it without the wisdom that only comes from the Lord. The path of the world is the path of the fool. I don’t know about you, but that’s not the path I want to be on.
Whenever I heard all of this the first time, it was like a slap in the face. It really called me out on some of the ways I was choosing to live my life. For example: I would scroll on my phone for hours when I could have been reading my Bible instead. I hope this post opens your eyes to some ways you might be able to improve your walk with Christ, and that it would be an encouragement to you to know that the wisdom that you seek comes from someone who loves you so deeply! I hope you all have an amazing week, and I’ll see you next Monday!
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Christ our wisdom, we adore you for the beauty of the cross. Once in foolishness we scorned you but Your blood has ransomed us. Help us sing the endless mercies of Your humble heart to save.
